 can cat food
awhile ago, I asked about can cat food. for some reason, ,my two female dogs go nuts over can cat food. I can give them a choice of a steak or can cat food, and they would pick the can cat food I asked awhile back, what is in their they love so much. lasergrl told me, it was the "fish oil" so, I bought fish oil, mixed it in their food, but, it still was not appealing. maybe I can use all the ingrediants in the can cat food, minus the stuff that is not good for dogs in their food. I cook the brats food for them. so, they generally don't eat dry dog food. they get a fair amount of meat in their food. anyway have ideas?

 Re: can cat food
If it isnt the fish oil, then its the fat. Cats need fat and protein in higher amounts. Dogs cant have all the fat :( It would cause pancreatitis and obesity. Liver is stinky, maybe they like that? Can cat food has all kinds of things in it to make it stinky. Its not that it tastes good. Animals dont worry as much about taste as us, its all about smell. Have you tried that bottled dog gravy? Its pretty similiar to the smell of cat food.

 Re: can cat food
never heard of "bottled dog gravy" who sells that?
I am just so confused with this can cat food. as I mentioned, I put alot of meat. (chicken and/or beef) in their food. I cook big batches of it, freeze them.
no matter what I give them, they go nuts over the can cat food.
Let me know about the gravy, I will try that.

 Re: can cat food
A rare treat of cat food wont hurt them but aside from having more protein and fat it has more retinol(vitamin A). This can cause vitaminosis over time which leads to spinal problems. In dogs it usually starts in the neck. Most animals don't need as much as cats and dogs don't either. So they should not be fed cat food.
And yeah my dogs are all about the smell. Quasi especially smells everything before eating it. Put a bit of ketchup on something they love or even near it on the plate and they wont touch it because they smell the ketchup.

 Re: can cat food
thanks for the tip on the gravy. will try and see if that helps. my dogs sometimes steal the empty can cat food out of the garbage sometimes, I mix about half a can in their food, so they eat their food. maybe I will try putting some rotton meat near their food dish one more thing, my dogs will eat donkey poo sometimes. even cow poo. what the hell is so apealing about that? to save money, I should just mix that in their food dish (just kidding)

 Re: can cat food
Pat, try canned mackeral or sardines in water, I alternate these with my dogs. Some clients buy fish oil capsules and put in the food.

 Re: can cat food
Yeah the poop eating is common though not well understood. Quasi ate goose poop when younger but grew out of that. Lots of animals will eat poop or young animals eat their parents poop for the bacteria for proper gut function. So the most likely theory is that it's for the bacteria for their digestion.

 Re: can cat food
fish actually grosses me out, but, will try the mackeral or sardines. I actually put some fish oil capsules in their food yesterday when I cooked it. but, didn't split the capsules. I tried splitting the capsules awhile back, but, it was a pain to doing that. so, I just threw some capsules in the food while cooking. going to the store today, will put the fish on my list. thank you for the info.

 Re: can cat food
Hi Pat and TamanduaGirl, I know many domestic dogs that love to roll around in feces. I have also heard of many domestic dogs that like to eat cat feces out of the litter box. But I have never heard of domestic dogs that likes to eat cow, donkey or goose feces . You all wonder why I am a cat person now ? Lastly let me know if your dogs like that vita gravy dog "food". I also thought if you wanted you could use no salt human grade beef or chicken broth/stock.

 Re: can cat food
I use to catch my dogs doing that once in a while. (I make sure I have all litter box with lids on now) I think, because of the can cat food the cats eat. my dogs love that so much, they will even eat their cat poo.

 Re: can cat food
bb, thats funny. would really love understand their thoughts sometimes. well, at least you don't have to clean up after the emu, only the pigs. but, then if the dogs eat pig doo, then all you have is dog doo, now you need an animal that will eat the doggie doo maybe we should just start feeding our dogs grain I also seen my dogs eating grain the other day, I was outside, I seen my dogs eating donkey doo, then I seen the donkeys eating chicken doo, then the chickens eating dog doo. (just kidding about the chickens eating dog doo) but, the donkeys eating chicken doo gee, we can really do some recycling there..
